At Garage Décor and More we will visit your home for a free consultation. Whether you need more storage in your basement, master bedroom, or garage, we can help. The first tip offered for a closet re-design in this particular article applies to any organizational project you may have: figure out your storage needs beforeyou begin the process.

Before you start designing, it’s best to start decluttering. Go through your closet(s) and get rid of items you no longer need or wear. Invite your friends over for a movie night, asking if they want any of the items you’ve accumulated over the years or donate the unwanted items to a local organization. Some re-sale shops even will pay you for name brand clothing and accessories. Once you have a better idea what needs re-organization in your closet space, it’s easier to think about its design. Otherwise, you’ll be designing storage for items you don’t even use.

Your clothing will take up a certain amount of space. Folded sweaters, for example, take up 9-15 inches of linear space each. Pants or jeans on the hanger will require up to 50 inches of vertical space. Planning on storing winter coats and jackets in the closet you are redesigning? They can take up even more room in your closet! When designing a closet, it’s also important to figure out how many dresses you own or blouses and skirts for work. Do you attend many formal affairs each year? Make sure you have room for those formal dresses and suits. Depending on the clothing, the space needed will vary.

One recommended way to maximize space in a closet design is to utilize corner shelving. In a corner, you can hang clothes or store your purses and suitcases. If you don’t have enough space for a corner shelf, it’s ok to have the panel overlap. It still gives you access to store items you may not use as often, or seasonal items like winter clothes and boots.

A trip to an island sounds good after a long, cold winter, but it’s just as desirable when you’re dreaming of a master bedroom closet redesign. If there is room in your closet, including an island in the plans can be life-changing. Similar to a kitchen island, it’s ideal to have at least 36-inches of a walkway on each side. 30-inches or 24-inches may work, but you’ll be sacrificing some clearance and mobility. More walkway space, means more room for pull-out drawers and more storage!

Adding a shoe rack is also a wonderful idea when re-designing your closet. Make sure you have large enough “shoe cubbies” to store your shoes. Women’s shoes range anywhere from 5 ½ – 10 inches wide, while a man’s pair of shoes can be 6 ½ -10 ½ inches wide. At Garage Décor and More, we will design plenty of space for your shoes and also your winter boots, keeping them organized and well-kept.

Higher-end closets also offer room for a bench to sit. It’s an ideal place to put shoes and stockings on, and typically benches can be installed under higher windows or below drawer storage if an island is also in the plans. A place for accessories is also a wonderful addition to anyone looking to upgrade their closet, offering homeowners a place for their purses, jewelry, neckties, and more. A jewelry tray can be added to one of the drawers in the newly designed space, installed either in the island or in a drawer near a vanity.
