A Better Way to Store Your Tires

tire rackWhether you have a set of winter tires and a set of summer tires, or you just like having a spare set of tires on hand for when you need to replace your current set, you need to answer one question: where will you store your spare set of tires?

The question is not as easy to answer as you might think. Tires are heavy and bulky, and if you try to store them upright, they tend to roll around. They can also scuff up your beautiful garage flooring if you try to store them on the floor.

You can try storing them on shelves or garage cabinets, but if you’re not careful, that can result in the same problem you have if you try to store them on the floor: they’re not held in place, which leaves them free to roll around.

Use a Tire Rack

Tire racks are shelving designed specifically for your tires. You can mount them on the wall as high or as low as you feel comfortable with. Remember that tires are heavy, so you probably don’t want to mount the tire rack too high on the wall, unless you’re comfortable you’ll be able to lift the tires high enough to get them onto and off the tire rack.

Before mounting your tire rack, make sure you’ll be putting it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and any other sources of heat, such as hot pipes or electric generators. Finding the right place to store your tires is as critical as the positioning of your tires while they’re in storage.

Protecting Your Tires

Tire duffels are a great way to protect your tires while they’re in storage. They wrap around your tire, which not only helps keep the tires clean while they’re in storage, it can also help keep your floors clean as you’re transporting and/or storing your tires.

Making sure your tires are clean before you put them in storage is another great way to protect them. Check for any pebbles that might have gotten stuck in the grooves of your tires and remove them before putting your tires away.

Rotating Your Tires

Rotating your tires is a great way to get the most out of them before they wear out, but if you’re switching out your tires based on the season, you should make a note of each tire’s position on your car. That way you can properly rotate them the next time you put them back on your car to ensure they wear evenly.
