How to Organize Pantry Overflow

pantry overflowWe all know too well how our pantries can get out of control, especially when we buy in bulk to stock up. This is especially true if you are into extreme couponing, or if you like to have things on hand if unexpected guests arrive. Just remember that the key to getting your pantry in order is organization. Here are some handy tips to help you organize the overflow of your kitchen pantry.

Different Categories
It is important to group like items together when organizing your pantry. Designate a section for each category of your pantry, such as spices, vegetables, baking supplies, and pastas. You will probably need to pull everything out and organize it into your categories. You can use clear plastic containers or wire baskets to keep things neat, together, and easy to find. This will also save you a lot of time when you are cooking because you won’t have to search for the ingredients you need.

Labels are a Huge Help
Whether you use clear plastic containers or not, labels are the way to go. If you label each container with the item it contains it will help you to see what you have and find it quickly when you need it. You can use a label maker or use a black permanent marker. Labeling your containers and shelves is also a great way for you to remember to put things back where you found them to that you stay well organized.

Your Storage Can Help You Save Money
You can save money with creative storage by always knowing what’s in your pantry so that you don’t buy duplicates. These duplicates can multiply over time and cause the serious overflow that we are trying to avoid. People usually buy duplicates because their pantry is so deep they can’t see what’s on the back of the shelf. Deep shelves in your pantry are not a good idea and can cause problems, like not being able to see what you have on hand. Again, this is where clear plastic containers and wire baskets can come in handy. You will be able to see what you have on hand and make your list according to your needs and then you won’t be causing overflow.

Choose a Location for Your Overflow
If your kitchen pantry is not big enough for your needs, you need to try and find a place to put the overflow. You can use cabinets or shelves in your basement or garage for things you don’t use all the time such as canned goods, jams and jellies, sodas, and extra pots and pans that you don’t use on a daily basis. You can also store your storage bags, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and extra paper towels and napkins in your overflow space.

Snack Cabinet for the Kids
If you’re like many of us, you have kids at home, and they are always hungry when they get home from school. To help keep your pantry neat and clean, designate a cabinet in the kitchen for their own snacks. They will be able to get their snack themselves and not get into your pantry and mess up your neat organization.
