Attics: Simple Steps to Get Your Act Together

You can sense it lingering overhead— those dusty boxes and piles of memorabilia –threatening to be lost or forgotten forever.  It’s…it’s… ATTIC CLUTTER!!!how-to-organize-attic-1

With a little manpower and a lot of focus, you can clean up your attic space and have fun doing it.  Just follow our simple steps.

Step 1:  Roll Call

Before you can find a proper “home” for your things, you first need to take inventory of the items you are currently storing in your attic.  Most people tend to stash items like old toys, family heirlooms, collectibles and keepsakes in the attic.  These items probably hold some significance to you, but you just didn’t know where else to put them.

Take some time just to browse through boxes before you try to sort things.  You can use a marker to write on the outsides of containers as you go, or keep a notepad handy to jot down ideas.

Step 2:  Show Time

Okay, now that you know what you’re dealing with, it’s time to get down to business.  Start sorting items into appropriate categories:

Toss It – These treasures have officially passed their expiration date.  Recycle if possible; otherwise, send them off with next week’s garbage truck.

Sell It – These items still have some value, but just not in your home anymore.

Save It – Get creative and give old items new life.

Store It – Some keepsakes really should be kept.  Great storage solutions will provide a peaceful resting place for these things until the time is right to bring them out.

At this point, you can remove the Toss It pile from view.  Next, decide how you want to handle the Sell It stack.  You could host a garage sale, post items for sale online, or take them to a consignment shop.  For the Save It items, the internet is a great place to find ideas to breathe new life into old treasures.  For example, you could turn a box of sentimental clothing pieces into a great quilt or wall décor.  Finally, you’re ready for the items in the Store It pile.  Make use of sturdy shelves, clean containers and detailed labels to make sure you’ll be able to find exactly what you need when you need it in the future.

Step 3:  Take a Bow

Once you’ve cleared the space and swept up the dust bunnies, you can give yourself a round of applause.  Too many people allow the attic to become jammed and crammed with clutter over the years.  Taking a little time to get your act together by organizing your items will not only give you more usable space, but it can also be a chance to stroll down memory lane.
